The Art of Not Rushing Intimacy

There is a curious paradox in developing a connection with someone: the stronger the attraction becomes, the greater the temptation to hurry it along.

A particularly enjoyable conversation leads to another. A little flirtation becomes affection. Affection becomes attachment. Before long, we find ourselves wanting to define the relationship, establish exclusivity, exchange deeper confidences or find ways to bring the connection into other parts of our lives.

But intimacy has its own pace, and it rarely responds well to being hurried.

One of the easiest mistakes is to confuse emotional intensity with emotional readiness. Two people may feel strongly drawn to each other while having very different ideas about how quickly that connection should develop. One may be ready to take the next step; the other may genuinely enjoy what exists but prefer to let it evolve without additional expectations.

Neither position necessarily invalidates the connection.

So how do we resist the urge to accelerate?

  1. Stay with the moment. Enjoy the conversation you are having rather than treating it as a stepping stone towards the next milestone.
  2. Don’t turn every expression of affection into a negotiation. A warm message does not have to lead to a discussion about commitment. Sometimes affection is simply affection.
  3. Let the other person set their own pace. If they say they want to proceed slowly, take that seriously. Don’t treat patience as a strategy for eventually changing their mind.
  4. Resist manufacturing tests of closeness. Avoid using silence, declarations or demands for reassurance to establish how much someone cares.
  5. Allow the connection to remain what it is today. It may deepen tomorrow. It may change direction. Neither possibility needs to be resolved immediately.

There is a difference between allowing intimacy to develop and trying to make it develop.

Perhaps genuine closeness requires a certain confidence: the willingness to enjoy what two people share without constantly asking it to become something more.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do for a connection is give it room to breathe.
